چکیده

As a result of previous research, Ranzi & Tamini (1939) pointed out that the notochord of Amphibian embryos of several species treated with sodium thiocyanate (NaSCN) solutions is larger than the notochord of control embryos. Later, several substances were identified which cause enlargement of the notochord: full data and a complete review of the literature on this subject are given by Ranzi & Citterio (1954) and Ranzi (1957). A careful statistical study on the number of nuclei in Rana esculenta embryos was carried out by Corti (1950). In embryos which had been treated for 24 hours with 0-05 M NaSCN, from the late blastula stage onwards, she found 1233 + 28 nuclei at the tail-bud stage, whereas the controls reared in spring-water had only 1107 + 24 nuclei: these two sets of data are significantly different (standard error of the difference ±37). Enlargement and induction of notochord by NaSCN treatment have been reported by Badfnez, Carrasco, & Manriquez (1954). Notochord can be obtained from ventral explants and from explants of presumptive mesoderm by means of urea, which acts like NaSCN (Leone, 1952), or by means of NaSCN (Ogi, 1957a). However, Ogi (1957W counted the nuclei of a few embryos of Bufo vulgar is and JR. nigromaculata treated with NaSCN and Nal and was unable to demonstrate an increase. For these reasons we thought it useful to repeat the work of Corti, but on another species, Xenopus laevis (Daudin), which appeared to be very sensitive to substances causing alterations of development (for the effect of LiCl see Backstrom, 1954).

Chordin is required for the Spemann organizer transplantation phenomenon in Xenopus embryos.

We analyzed the Chordin requirement in Xenopus development. Targeting of both chordin Xenopus laevis pseudoalleles with morpholino antisense oligomers (Chd-MO) markedly decreased Chordin production. Embryos developed with moderately reduced dorsoanterior structures and expanded ventroposterior tissues, phenocopying the zebrafish chordino mutant. A strong requirement for Chordin in dorsal develo...

The distribution of tenascin coincides with pathways of neural crest cell migration.

The distribution of the extracellular matrix (ECM) glycoprotein, tenascin, has been compared with that of fibronectin in neural crest migration pathways of Xenopus laevis, quail and rat embryos. In all species studied, the distribution of tenascin, examined by immunohistochemistry, was more closely correlated with pathways of migration than that of fibronectin, which is known to be important fo...

Somitogenesis in the amphibian Xenopus laevis: scanning electron microscopic analysis of intrasomitic cellular arrangements during somite rotation.

The intrasomitic changes in cell arrangement which accompany somite rotation during somitogenesis in Xenopus laevis were analysed with the scanning electron microscope (SEM). Longitudinal, horizontal fractures of whole embryos were examined at various dorsoventral levels of stage-22 to -24 embryos. Observations of the gross morphological features of somitogenesis, and the cellular changes which...

Expression of hsp90 Alpha and hsp90 Beta during Xenopus laevis Embryonic Development

Background: Members of the eukaryotic Hsp90 family function as important molecular chaperones in the assembly, folding and activation of cellular signaling in development. Two hsp90 genes, hsp90 alpha and hsp90 beta, have been identified in fish and homeothermic vertebrates but not in poikilothermic vertebrates. In the present study, the expression of hsp90 alpha and hsp90 beta genes in Xenopus...

Transforming growth factor-β5 expression during early development of Xenopus laevis

Members of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) superfamily play various roles during development in both vertebrates and invertebrates. Two isoforms, TGF-beta2 and -beta5, have been isolated from Xenopus laevis. We describe here the localization of TGF-beta5 mRNA in early embryos of X. laevis, assessed by whole-mount in situ hybridization. The first detectable expression of TGF-beta5...
